Root Canals

A root canal is a restorative dentistry procedure that is used to save a tooth that is badly infected or has decayed. During the procedure the nerve and pulp inside the tooth is extracted from the central part of the tooth and the tooth is cleaned out and sealed with a strengthening filler. The tooth’s nerve is not a vital part of the health and function of the tooth which is why is can be successfully removed without damage the tooth. The only function the nerve provides is the sensation for hot and cold and it is purely sensory.

WHY DO I NEED A ROOT CANAL?

Root canal treatment is required when the nerve tissue inside a tooth degenerates. A deep cavity, traumatic injury, or a fracture of your tooth can make a tooth susceptible to a bacterial infection, which can created pressure, stimulate increased blood flow and kill the nerve within the tooth. Without root canal treatment, the infection within the tooth pulp can result in an abscess, which can eventually lead to damage to the jawbone, loss of the tooth and even more pain. A root canal is necessary if you want to save your tooth and ensure that the tissue around the root of the tooth remains healthy and is free of inflammation. Make sure to see a cosmetic dentist in the earliest stages of this condition. Otherwise, more action will be required.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED A ROOT CANAL?

If a tooth is causing you pain or if the gums adjacent to the tooth are swollen and tender, you may need a root canal. Another symptom is if the tooth has become extra sensitive to heat or cold and/or if the tooth appears to be discolored. If the tooth is inflamed or shows signs of infection within the pulp of the tooth then we would recommend getting the root canal procedure.

The following are other symptoms that might lead you to the dentist:

  • A recurring abscess on the gums
  • Toothache pain from chewing or application of pressure
  • Prolonged tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures

  • If you experience the symptoms mentioned above, contact DK Dental Clinic so we can examine your tooth and take the necessary course of action before the condition gets worse.
